Stencils

I want to do more of them. I have had one drawn up for ages and have not got around to cutting it yet. One day.

Completed Eagle

Finished this off last night.

Good experience but not 100% happy with the end result. I felt like a rushed the last parts I worked on and was starting to lose focus in what I was trying to do. Saying that, I have other ideas I want to try and illustrate with other methods and mediums I want to work on. This is a learning experience for me, I do feel I have learned something from this exercise and will endeavour to continue with these projects.

And this is the reference I used.

New Print Day

It has been a while.

Florian along with Moon Editions has released a new art print. Lately I have been trying to avoid images of this nature but there were a few little things that made me might to buy this. Due to Florian living in Germany and a lot of his work being printed in the States, most of his prints that go up for sale are not signed by him. Whilst in California recently to oversee the process he manage to sign and number, drew two unique pictures, and add a hand painted detail to all 40 prints.

The specifics:
Florian Bertmer “Necromancer”

7 color serigraph on archival Stonehenge 250gsm (Grey).

Every print has two hand drawn illustrations in pen and ink, and one hand painted highlight, making each print unique.

18.25″ x 27.25″

Signed and numbered by the artist.

Edition of 40.

Everything on this print turned out great in my mind. Another great job by a great artist.

Moon Editions also offer engraving and added one of these little goodies to every order. Planchette inspired keyring with skull detail.

Willows of Australia

Willows were probably one of the better bands to come out of Brisbane in recent history. This is their CD that was recorded at the start of the year. Aside from this being amazing musically, the packaging is a great touch and nice little visual aesthetic to the band.

img_2737.jpg
Wax stamped “W”. There is also a red variant.
img_2736.jpg
Hand written spine.
img_2738.jpg
A traditional typewriter was used for the track listing.
img_2739.jpg
Liner notes have a short message from the band as well has the usual thank you’s and who’s involved. CD’s are stamped with a custom logo they had made up.

If you are after one, send the guys an email.

Mandala #1

Finished this off. Would definitely do another.

I used Illustrator to create clipping masks and place the sections. I tried not to use the same part of the reference twice also and get a variety of textures and tones. Pretty happy with the outcome. Would like to get a little more complex with the pattern next time.

Here is the base image also.

Work in Progress

Got the idea idea in my head about trying to create a mandala style design using drawings I have previously done. Using Illustrator and creating clipping mask and mirroring them, I am trying to create a symmetrical circular design.

This is how far I have gotten on this one. I have been using sections from my rhino drawing from a few months ago as the base of the sections. Kind of enjoying creating this and interested to see where it is going to lead.

In an effort….

….to improve my drawing skills and techniques, I have started just finding reference images of things I think are awesome and going to attempt drawing them. I’m going to try some different mediums too hopefully in the future but currently A4 art journal, pencils and linemarkers might be the way to go due to being able to take it with me places easily.

First is a Golden Hawk. This is where I am up too with it.

Aaron Horkey Interview

Following his (maybe last ever) solo show in his home town of Windom, Minnesota, Aaron Horkey has sat down for an interview with HiFrustose Magazine to talk about his work, high standards, and how he goes about about constructing some of the best show posters out there.

Here the links to the 2 parts of the interview. It is a great read with some detail shots of some of his work.
