City Cycle

I saw this the other day and I am interested to see how it works out.

CityCycle is a planned in form of public transport being set up by Brisbane City Council to encourage environmentally friendly transit around the city with the public being able to hire a bike from one of 150 stations.

I am all for this idea of people having access to rental bikes to help get around city. I can see pros and cons to this also. The council have promised free bike hire for people who take less than 30 minutes to get from one station to another to drop the bike off. But the downside is that the helmet laws here might make it difficult to get a rental helmet. The council is working on setting up locations in which you can do this.

There are many more that I am not going to get into, like how I can foresee an increase to bicycle related accidents and that the payment systems sounds about as tourist friendly as the go-card.

Installation of the stations is commencing in May 2010 and is looking to be officially ready for the public late 2010.
