Drawing on Things
I have always liked artwork on skate decks and other less common mediums (ie any but paper, canvas and so on). The idea in some ways seems more unique in that if you have a texture or pattern underneath the work it is going to make it harder to replicate, like for example wood grain. Wood grain in my mind seems to add a raw aesthetic to work, no matter how polished/neat/clean the design on looks.
For some time now, I have been trying to finish off a design on a skate deck for one of my housemates bands (Shellfin) as a laugh to give to him as a birthday present. Needless to say it never happen (his birthday was in October). So, I have this half finished designed sitting at home. I purchased some paint pens recently because permanent markers were not doing their job at being permanent and stopped marking shortly after I started using a new one. It will be finished soon.
3rd of March, 2009 - Something Different
I recently brought a new bike helmet which I plan on drawing over. I have a few ideas for designs, but I need to keep the design of the helmet in mind as I go. I plan on using a black and white paint pens and the matt orange colour of the helmet in the designs.
First idea I have for the helmet is to use a design from the band Doomriders.
There are few reasons why -
1) I like the band.
2) I like the design.
3) I like the idea of having a design for a band called Doomriders on a bike helmet.
This is going to be put on the back of the helmet in center. I am going to try and use carbon paper to help trace the image on to the helmet so I can see how the placement looks before I start using the paint pens.
4th of March, 2009 - Ride or Die
On the way home from work, I stopped off to get some supplies to do this idea. Transfer paper and a white paint pen. I had a printed copy of the image at home ready to go. Got home, cut the image to good size, cut out some transfer paper to the same size and stuck it on the helmet.
Using the end of a pair of tweezers (a solid pointed end works best when using transfer paper), I traced around the printed image which recreated the outline on the helmet. Once that was done, I used the white paint pen first to fill in the skull. Then the black and left the grey parts in the above image the colour of the helmet. Easy, done. “Ride or Die” mother fuckers.
More to come….
